Hello Woodturners,
This is your reminder about the meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. (MWI) this Saturday, (July 17, 2010) at 9:30 a.m. on the Jones County Junior College (JCJC) campus in Ellisville, Mississippi. If you would like to see a map and other information about MWI, please click on: http ://magnoliawoodturners.org/gpage1.html .
We are most fortunate to again have member Jan Adams Bogalusa, Louisiana as the demonstrator for this meeting. Jan’s work is truly “wood art” because of the unique and creative art work he imparts on his pieces after he turns them. His stone inlays, carving, air spray painting, and other embellishments just keep getting better. Jan is glad to show and tell you the many complicated steps he takes to create each of his unique pieces. This is going to be a definite “hands on” demonstration.
Here again for your information is the message Jan sent me last month: “Clyde, it will be about the same hands on type of thing that I have done in the past. I will cover different types of surface embellishment such as carving, burning Painting, inlay etc. I will need for everyone that wants to participate to bring an old bowl, platter or just a chunk of wood to practice on. If they have wood carving, or burning tools of any kind they should bring them. If they do not have such then I will have plenty for them to work with.
I will bring different types of burners, carvers etc for everyone to try out and see what they like to work with best. I will also share some techniques for these tools and go over how to transfer designs onto your turned pieces.”
And if that is not a generous offer, I don't know what is. Please, plan to attend and to have a good time because this meeting is about both learning and having a good time and it is all free.
Our hard working librarian, Raymond Mars recently spent a lot of hours updating and summarizing the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. library status. He has put together a report that should be reviewed by the users and others who may have forgotten about borrowing something. The report is not attached because I could not make it work, but hopefully can be to a later meeting notice when I learn how, but you can see it at the meeting. It gives the details of where library material is presently, according to the card file. As we already know, both “checking out” and “checking in” all items borrowed are the member’s responsibility and not the librarian’s. You simply have to initial the card in the box when you borrow it and then initial the same card when you return the item. Raymond doesn't do either of these for you! Apparently, in a few cases folks have not bothered to correctly check them out. We need these items back in a timely fashion and there are currently no charges for keeping an item out longer than you should.
Roland Pimm has to give up his very nice table saw due to a lack of space for it in his shop at his new home. The saw is a 10 inch, “Ridgid” brand, cast iron top, mobile base, and all in excellent condition. Also, it can be used with 110V or 220V. He has placed a price of $375.00 on the saw because he would like to have the space it is taking up in his shop asap. The best method for reaching him is by his cell phone: # 228-239-0731.
If you have not renewed your CY membership for the measly amount of $25, you can pay at this meeting or send your checks to our new MWI treasurer, Archie Lancaster, at this address: 5325 Balmoral Drive, Jackson, MS 39211.
Some of you are already aware that when Phillip Morris had to give up woodworking/turning, he donated a rather large number of dried bowl blanks and turned box blanks to Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. be used for fund raising of our choice. We will use half of them at JCJC and half at Canton. These are good “stuff” and not rejects. We could do that by offering raffle tickets for $1 each and draw the ticket duplicates from a “hat” and let each winner choose one bowl blank or two box blanks until they are gone. If you have a better proposal, just let it be known, as it will be a fun way to raise a few dollars for the club kitty. Phillip did in fact sell all of the items on the list you saw last month.
If you are in the Jackson area and would like to carpool down you should be in the parking lot at Sutherland Lumber Co, 717 Highway 80 E, Pearl, MS no later than 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning. (You can get there by taking Exit 47B from I-20 East Bound.) Even if you are not in this immediate area it may be worth your time and gasoline to check around with some others to see about sharing rides.
Safe Turning,
Clyde
